You want a company who is in your budget, but who can also be trusted with your items and who will show up at all your stops on-time. The best way to find the right moving company is to get quotes from a few different companies. You should look at price, but you should also examine a few other factors. Here are three important things to consider to help you find the right company for your move:
Did they examine your items in person? While some moving companies may provide you with an estimate over the phone, most moving companies will actually want to see your items in person before they give you a price. The reason is that pricing is often based on weight and that depends on the type of furniture and belongings you have. Simply telling a company over the phone that you have a three bedroom house doesn't really give them enough information to provide an informed quote based on weight. After they load the truck, they may tell you that their estimate was too low and your bill will be higher. You can avoid that nasty surprise by having them come out and see your belongings in person.
Is the quote binding? Moving companies will often provide either binding or non-binding quotes. A binding quote is one in which the price is locked-in, so you know exactly what you'll pay on moving day. In a non-binding quote, the moving company gives you an estimate, but they could change the amount due. If the moving company has come out and examined your belongings, then they should be able to provide a binding quote. Make sure the written quote says "binding" somewhere on the paper. That way, you can budget accurately for the cost of your move.
Is their insurance coverage sufficient? The risk of damage is always present during a move. You have a lot of belongings packed onto a truck, so it's entirely possible that things could bump around. The moving company should offer some level of insurance to protect your belongings. Be sure that their coverage is enough to cover the loss of all your belongings. If it's not, consider another mover or see if you can by additional insurance protection.
